'Frankie Celebrates Like He's Won the Nunthorpe' - Luke Morris Goes from the Saddle to the Commentary Booth

Ahead of this week’s York Ebor festival, four top jockeys have swapped their saddles for the commentary booth, revisiting their victorious Nunthorpe rides in a special challenge. Luke Morris, Jason Hart, Paul Mulrennan, and Sean Kirrane all participated in a fun commentary exercise that saw them recall their winning performances in the prestigious Nunthorpe Stakes.

Luke Morris Reflects on 2017 Nunthorpe Victory

Luke Morris took on the commentary challenge by revisiting his thrilling 2017 Nunthorpe victory aboard Marsha. Morris fondly remembered his narrow win over Frankie Dettori, who was riding Lady Aurelia. Recalling the tight finish, Morris said: “Now they head into the final few strides, it begins to get tight. It's heads up, heads down, and it could have gone either way. Frankie celebrates like he's won the Nunthorpe, but the judge however will decide."

Morris reflected on the pressure-free approach his team had that day, given the tough competition from both Lady Aurelia and Bataash. “She brought her A-game,” he said, recalling how Marsha exceeded expectations in one of the strongest Nunthorpe lineups.

Alongside Morris, other jockeys took part in the commentary exercise. Paul Mulrennan commented on his 2016 victory with Mecca’s Angel, while Jason Hart recounted his win aboard Highfield Princess in 2022. Sean Kirrane also joined the challenge, reflecting on his 2023 victory with Live In The Dream.

ITV Racing commentator Richard Hoiles, who led the exercise, praised the jockeys' efforts, saying, “I was amazed at how well they all did with this – much better than I would do on a horse! It was loads of fun and just highlighted what a bunch of professionals they are.”

Engaging Fans at the York Ebor Festival

The commentary challenge is one of many activities designed to engage fans at this year’s York Ebor festival. The event also features autograph sessions, race-riding demonstrations, and interactive elements like a pop-up jockey gym. Fans attending York or watching from home can enjoy these activities as part of a memorable four-day meeting, filled with top-class racing and entertainment.
